Curriculum

The Brooks academic program includes literacy, mathematics, social studies, and science with an infusion of technology.

  • Structured Literacy Framework through which students receive differentiated and explicit instruction in all four domains of discourse: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

  • Structures of Genre-Based Writing, Interactive Read-Aloud, Shared Reading, Phonics, and Word Study are used to help students progress in their development as skilled readers and writers using evidence-based literacy instruction.

  • Comprehensive Math Framework through which students receive differentiated and explicit instruction in the following domains: number and number sense, computation and estimation, measurement and geometry, probability and statistics, and patterns, functions, and algebra.

  • Supplemental reading and math interventions for students not performing on-level

  • Intervention and enrichment classes during the school day to meet specific needs of students.

  • Advanced Academic Services (AAS) for students in grades K-5 includes Young Scholars, General Intellectual Aptitude (GIA), and Specific Academic Aptitude (SAA) enrichment.

    • Young Scholars: The Young Scholars Model is designed to help identify students from historically underrepresented populations for gifted services. The model provides additional opportunity to nurture talent and build confidence so that students can meet their potential. The goal is to prepare Young Scholars for challenging courses and success in the future. The Young Scholars model supports the notion of providing equity of opportunity to students so that any child who has an exceptional ability to think, reason, and problem-solve will be able to participate in advanced academic classes.

    • GIA: Enriched & integrated classroom activities designed to enhance creativity and problem-solving without being specifically tied to any one subject area.

    • SAA (Grades 4 & 5):

      • Math and Language Arts - Direct instruction from a teacher who specializes in teaching talented and gifted children with a curriculum that is accelerated and significantly above grade-level expectations.

      • Science and Social Studies - Differentiated Educational Plans (DEPs) outline individual enrichment & extension activities to be completed in the general education classroom.
